GUL SOHRAB - BREAKING BORDERS OF GENDER AND CRAFT WITH LOCAL TEXTILES
Gul Sohrab was never meant to be a brand born out of a rigid business plan. It began organically, from a frustration with the fashion industry’s fast-paced cycles and a deep urge to create on their own terms. What started as an experiment soon grew into something larger, even their first collection was simply a few pieces shared on Instagram to gauge people’s reactions.
Every piece we make is a sample, unique, unrepeatable. That itself is storytelling, because no two people will ever wear the exact same piece.”

REIMAGINING THE SPACE
For Gul Sohrab, the studio is more than a workspace, it’s a vision of inclusivity. They imagine a space not dominated by cis-het men, but shared across genders and sexualities, where collaboration itself becomes craft.
This belief shapes their process. Their shoots feature queer people as they are, without forcing gendered roles, bringing authenticity into every image. Many campaigns unfold in their home, reflecting how personal style and lived experience are inseparable from the brand.
Fashion, for them, is never just clothing. It is political, it is lifestyle, it is storytelling, expressed through the spaces they build, the people they work with, and the garments they create.
"Madras checks have always been around us, from saris to lungis, men to women. To us, they’ve always been genderless and timeless. We don’t it as just a pattern. For us, it’s a form, something we can transform while keeping its roots intact.”

TRACING CHECKS WITHOUT BORDERS
Gul Sohrab is really connected to fabrics that carry personal and cultural meaning. Things like Madras checks and gamchas are especially important in what they do. Their love for checkered patterns started during travels, when they collected lungis from places like Kerala, Bangladesh, and Malaysia, fabrics that later became the basis for their first collections. To them, checks aren’t just a pattern; they’re a form of expression, something alive that can change shapes yet still keep their roots.
Growing up surrounded by Madras fabric, whether in saris or lungis, worn by both men and women, they see it as a gender-neutral and timeless textile. Every lungi they find isn’t just cloth; it holds memories, a sense of place, and cultural heritage. Each piece turns into a story thanks to that history. When Gul Sohrab changes these fabrics into unique, one-of-a-kind items, they preserve that heritage but also set it in a new space for style, identity, and connection.
"It’s radical to step away from seasons, from mass production, and just make what feels right, when it feels right.”

BEYOND THE BINARY
Gul Sohrab identifies as part of the queer, gender-neutral community, and their work is deeply rooted in their sense of identity. To them, queerness isn’t just a personal experience; it’s a way of life that influences everything they do — from the designs they make to the spaces they dream of creating. They envision a studio environment where cis-het men aren’t the norm, but instead, women, queer folks, and voices from all parts of the scope come together. They believe that a truly comprehensive workspace would be nothing short of amazing. For Gul Sohrab, clothing goes beyond just looking good. It’s about living your truth, making a statement, and sparking conversations. It’s a way to emphasize queerness, celebrate it openly, and make sure it stays a essential part of Indian fashion.
