Collection: No Borders x Tharangini

Tharangini is a heritage wood-block printing studio founded in 1977 in Bangalore by Lakshmi Srivastava, and now led by her daughter, Padmini Govind. As one of the oldest block printing studios in South India, Tharangini is a women-led, artisan-driven space that holds deep respect for sustainability, craft, and equality. We've had the joy of working closely with Padmini and the wonderful team at Tharangini for the past two years, hosting two workshops together and building a meaningful friendship rooted in shared values and creativity.

Together, we’ve been working to reimagine this ancient craft for the present day — infusing cheerful, youth-led designs into hand block-printed textiles. These collaborations aim to celebrate heritage while keeping the work relevant, alive, and joyful for a new generation. Every piece we create with them is a bridge between past and present, a celebration of tradition, colour, and conscious making.

Block printing is one of the world’s oldest textile printing techniques, dating back over 2,000 years. In India, it has long been integral to textile culture, especially in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and South India. The process uses intricately hand-carved wooden blocks, traditionally made from seasoned teak, soaked in oil, and cured, to stamp patterns onto fabric with natural or low-impact dyes.

Each block is a work of art, and the printing process requires precision, patience, and years of practice. At Tharangini, artisans carefully align each print by hand, layer by layer, keeping this meditative craft alive with deep skill and dedication.

Once central to India’s textile industry, block printing is now increasingly rare, but studios like Tharangini continue to protect and evolve the tradition with care and creativity.
